Business Center, H.Ibsen / Sofia

A quick concept design entry for a actual spot in Sofia – a Business Center on H.Ibsen Str.

There has been an approved silhouette plan with massing for the site, which served as a reference point for the design. The building was setup to be a high-end development with open office and minimal common spaces.

The main 3d scene modelling has been done by my colleague Samuil Ivanov and the environment materials and details were setup by Stoycho Iliev.

Modular residential complex, Luanda / Angola

Hi all, I present you the latest project that we’ve been working on for the past month.

The project is a residential complex, consisting of modular multi-family social buildings, located nearby the capital of the Republic of Angola – Luanda.

The current project documentation envisages the construction of two types of units: one-story multi-family residential buildings Type “A” and two-story multi-family residential buildings Type “B”.

Each one of the floors offers accommodation for two families (max 10 people), for each of whom are envisaged: one master bedroom, one children’s bedroom and one bathroom. For mutual usage, there are a kitchenette, a dining room and a living room.

The building has a solid load-bearing structure of reinforced concrete elements. Columns (as an element) are not envisaged. All walls (external and internal) are load-bearing, with a thickness of 25cm.

They are designed through the usage of a system of prefabricated, modular elements with cavities (permanent formwork), which later, on site, are filled with concrete. The floor slab as well as the roof (sloped, 20%) are designed through the same system.

The wall elements of the permanent formwork are made from “thastyron” (85% expanded polystyrene and 15% cement), which provides the necessary thermal insulation characteristics of the exterior shell.

While designing the buildings the main goals were to achieve as much useful space inside the area limitation given by the client and not waisting any space for passage ways and so on; to fit as many bedrooms in that area as possible and create usable common space (dining room, kitchen..); and since this is Africa, the natural ventilation was one of the main goals as well; the floor layout itself was driven not only by the previously mentioned  points, but also by the fact that the structure of the buildings was chosen to be the one with load bearing walls, built with modular elements, filled with concrete. And since the layout was supposed to be as simple as possible (also have in mind the social status of the buildings) and as functional as possible at the same time, the scheme was naturally chosen to be symmetrical. Also, because it’s a matter of hundreds, may be thousands of units, and everything should have been designed as precisely as possible, the buildings were entirely planned according to the modular elements cavities grid (37,5cm), because of the sufficiency and the optimization of different element sizes.

Gross area for Type “B”: 243,12m2

Plot area for both building types: 400m2

“In Spotlight”

“In Spotlight” is a section of the international ArchiCAD users magazine ArchiMAG.
